A Neighbor-Run HOA

About

Parkside is a small community and the Association is managed by volunteer homeowners rather than paid staff.

Board and committee members are your neighbors. Just like you, we have jobs, families, health issues, travel and other responsibilities. We volunteer our time to maintain common areas, manage Association finances, review architectural requests, respond to concerns and help administer the covenants.

We aim to handle matters fairly and consistently, based on the governing documents, available records, established property and common-area boundaries, the facts of each situation and the Association’s available resources.

What You Can Expect

We will:

  • Take homeowner questions and concerns seriously.

  • Review architectural requests and complaints fairly.

  • Follow the governing documents and applicable laws.

  • Respond as soon as reasonably possible.

  • Communicate respectfully and expect the same in return.

Some matters can be handled quickly. Others require research, discussion, a site visit, coordination among board members or professional advice. Responses may therefore take time, particularly when a matter is complex or disputed.

Start With Your Neighbor When Appropriate

Parkside is a close neighborhood. Many concerns involving noise, landscaping, parking, fences, pets or property maintenance can be resolved through a calm and respectful conversation.

Before filing a complaint, please consider:

  • Is this a safety issue, covenant violation or simply a difference in preference?

  • Have I allowed for a temporary situation?

  • Can I speak with my neighbor respectfully before involving the HOA?

  • Would I want the matter handled the same way if the complaint were about my property?

You are not expected to approach someone when doing so would feel unsafe or inappropriate. Emergencies, threats, suspected criminal activity and immediate safety concerns should be directed to the appropriate public agency.

What the HOA Can—and Cannot—Do

The HOA can address matters that fall within its governing documents and authority. It cannot resolve every disagreement between neighbors, enforce personal preferences or provide immediate on-demand service.

The Board must also consider fairness and consistency. An action taken in one situation may affect how similar situations must be handled throughout the community.

About Professional Property Management

The Association has discussed the possibility of hiring a professional property management company. Professional management could provide more administrative capacity, formalized follow-up and potentially faster response times.

It would also increase the HOA’s operating costs and likely require a substantial increase in annual dues. It would not eliminate the need for homeowner cooperation, board decisions or compliance with the covenants.

For now, Parkside continues to operate as a low-dues, volunteer-run HOA. That model works best when homeowners communicate respectfully, allow reasonable time for responses and participate in maintaining the community.

Help Make the Community Work

A successful volunteer HOA depends on reasonable expectations and shared responsibility. Please be patient, be neighborly and remember that the people responding to your concern are fellow homeowners giving their time to help the community.
